Un Prophete

I had to think for a while about what exactly i want to say about French filmmaker Jacques Audiard‘s new film UN PROPHETE. Lover of his films in general – i am. Bias to the types of movies he makes – definitely. Often i’ve found myself arguing that the last 10 minutes of De battre mon coeur s’est arrêté are some of the strongest (in regards to tension) that i’ve ever seen. In each of his films he’s been able to effectively create situations in which the moral extremes that our society identifies (what is right vs. what is wrong) blend together and in the end we are rooting for what is classically wrong.

UN PROPHETE more than lives up to the expectations that accompany Audiard films. Because I don’t want to spoil any portion of this film, I’ll refrain from speaking specifically about the story/scenes. Instead, what i’ll say is this, when you place a man in a hostel environment and survival is the primary concern, eventually survival is replaced with ambition. At the moment when ambition takes hold, the only active moral check is ones conscious…

However, can there really be room for a conscious inside a prison cell?

Do yourself a favor, see this film.

One Response to “Un Prophete”

  1. I’m only briefly acquainted w/the film-maker. Never seen any of his films. Just heard his name in associations & bios. Now I’ll have to see for myself.
